Torres del Paine

Here is where I spent most of my summer vacations as a child, no need to say it still is one of the most breathtaking views I have seen in my life.  Yet when one is starting the adventure of life, beauty  has a different meaning, and I was probably more aware of the horse ridings, the best breakfasts ever and the fact that we slept in a tent and that time had no rules. In those days this was not a National Park as it is now, it was a huge "estancia" (ranch)  and we just had to ask permission to camp. There were no limitations to make fire, cut wood, hunting or fishing.

Taking my morning bath at a freezing temperature would not stop me from the pleasure of swimming nude at six in the morning to then walk to the houses of the "ovejeros" (patagonian cowboys), where we were always welcome  to a breakfast consisting on coffee, fresh bread,  lamb chops, baked potatoes and the sweetest desert made out of dried peaches floating in a sea of syrup. Then there were the rides and more swimming in the lakes.  Fishing was something the adults would take care of, and I was always told just to keep silence or walk away from the river shore not to scare off the fishes, reason why I was never interested in practicing such a "boring" activity.

"Guanacos" were probably my favorite animals in the surroundings, adults always told me to be carefull because they would spit on me if they were mad or scared, and the guanaco spit is said to be very stinky.  I used to get very close to them, but certainly they were quite shy or rather suspicious, so they would never let me touch them as it was my intention.
